In 2001 Faisal Sultan started a new job as a streaming media engineer at one of the largest Internet Companies in the world in San Francisco, CA. Faced with long 12+ hour days, he always used to play his vast collection of dj mixes on his computer whilst he worked on coding the next generation of streaming media technologies and servers. Fondly referred to by friends and colleagues as “Frisky,” he decided to start broadcasting whatever he was listening to online – not realizing at the time that this deed would result in a world-wide phenomenon. What began as a project designed for personal electronica listening, soon gathered underground momentum off the back of his desire to share the music he enjoyed with friends made in the scene. He posted the stream link on a few Electronic Dance Music forums and shared it with his friends world-wide.
Pretty soon he started noticing a trend: that people were tuning in from all corners of the world to his music stream – so he decided to make it official and give it a name: thus “friskyRadio” was born just a few months after the stream went live.
Within just a few months, he started playing exclusive mixes that fans of the radio made especially for him. Realizing that friskyRadio could be a vehicle for the struggling bedroom DJ to reach a potentially global audience, he opened the stream up to submissions and started playing mixes from Djs from all over the world. What began as a simple music stream grew entirely through viral word-of-mouth and no advertising anywhere, making it not just a radio stream, but a movement.
Over the years, Faisal has continually maintained friskyRadio in his own free time, and with the generous donations from fans all over the world he has been able to grow the radio station into one of the top-most listened to stations for underground electronic music on the web that is a vehicle for DJs to spread their work to listeners all over the world.
With an abundance of dance related radio stations now casting their aural shadow across the web there are a few that have maintained a long track record of supporting upcoming stars and showcasing a wide variety of sounds from established artists. A personal labour of love over the years, the Frisky story is as warm as the sounds that emanate from his regular shows. Frisky explains his motivation for maintaining the hectic work load:
